5 healthy habits for your workplace

When it comes to supporting yourself and your staff in improving health and wellbeing, sharing knowledge is only the first step. To create lasting change, one crucial aspect that is often overlooked is managing the workplace environment.

As humans, our natural tendency when making decisions is to choose the easiest option. So, if the goal is to be healthier, start by making healthier choices easier and less healthy choices harder. Additionally, remind people why making a healthy choice will benefit them - boosted energy, improved focus, better sleep, and a reduced risk of disease and chronic illness, to name a few.

Here’s what you can do:

  • Place fruit bowls in visible, easily accessible locations.
  • Keep sweets, biscuits, and chips either out of the office/home entirely or stored in high, hard-to-reach cupboards to reduce mindless snacking.
  • Ensure decaf and herbal teas are easy to see and access, making them the default choice for those looking to reduce caffeine intake.
  • Encourage the use of stairs over lifts, walking meetings / phone calls, standing desks, and regular micro-breaks to move, get fresh air and refocus.
  • Organise onsite walking groups, exercise classes (or promote home workouts for remote workers), and offer nutrition workshops or webinars to make it easy for people to get involved, stay informed, and feel inspired.
