Considering weight loss medication?

Here’s how we can support you

With growing awareness and increasing accessibility of weight loss medications in Aotearoa New Zealand (such as Ozempic® and Wegovy®) more and more people are wondering whether these medications might be the right step for them.

At Mission Nutrition, we understand that this is a deeply personal decision. We don’t promote weight loss medication as a first-line solution, but we do recognise that for some, it can be a helpful tool. Our job is to support you, wherever you are in your journey, with expert, non-judgemental guidance.

A quick look at how these medications work

GLP-1 agonists work by mimicking a hormone in your body that helps regulate appetite and blood sugar levels. They can help reduce hunger and food intake, which may lead to weight loss over time. However, it’s important to note that these effects only continue while the medication is being taken. Once stopped, appetite and weight can often return to previous levels unless lifestyle changes are in place.

What’s happening in New Zealand?

These medications were originally developed to treat type 2 diabetes but are now being used more widely to support weight loss. In New Zealand, prescriptions are typically managed by GPs or specialists, and while access is growing, not everyone is eligible for publicly funded options. This means many people are exploring private prescriptions, often at considerable cost, in hopes of finding a long-term solution to their weight and health concerns.

But medication alone isn’t the answer.

Where Mission Nutrition comes in

Whether you’re considering weight loss medication, are in the process of deciding, or are already taking it - the support of a qualified nutrition expert is essential.

While they may affect how much you eat, they don’t change what your body needs to stay healthy.

That’s where we can help.

Working with a NZ Registered Nutritionist or Dietitian at Mission Nutrition means you’ll receive tailored support to:

  • Maintain muscle mass - important for metabolism, mobility, and long-term health
  • Support gut health - including fibre intake and the role of fermented foods
  • Prevent micronutrient deficiencies - especially if you’re eating less or cutting out food groups
  • Manage common side effects - such as nausea, constipation or reduced appetite
  • Optimise nutrient intake - including guidance around supplements if needed

We can also help you better understand why you eat, when you eat, and how to tune in to your body’s cues - so you can create a healthier, more sustainable relationship with food.

Thinking about medication? Consider starting here

If you’re considering weight loss medication, it can be helpful to explore other options first. Our team can help you build healthy habits, manage emotional eating, and feel more in control of your food choices without needing to rely on medication.

And if you and your healthcare provider decide that medication is the right choice for you, we’ll be here to support you alongside that journey - to make sure your health and wellbeing are being looked after, now and in the long term.
